GM Alternator

GM alternator refers to the component of the automobile’s electrical system that generates electricity through electromagnetic induction. As the name suggests, the alternator generates alternating current instead of direct current. Alternating current is more powerful and it can travel long distances with very few energy loss. Alternating current also has the advantage of being convertible. Alternating current can easily be converted into direct current by simply letting it pass through a circuit gate. Diodes are typically used as circuit gates that regulate the direction of current flow. Hence, it is possible for the alternator to recharge the automobile batteries that require direct current.

Automobile operations are made possible by both the fuel and electricity. The fuel produces the thermal energy needed for the engine generate mechanical output. On the other hand, electricity makes it possible for combustion to be sustainable. The high-voltage electrical sparks of the sparkplugs are the ones that trigger and sustain the combustion cycle. However, unlike the fuel, the electricity used by the automobile for engine functions can be generated by a particular automobile component, the alternator. The alternator is actually a small electrical generator that is powered by the engine itself through the camshaft.

An engine belt connects the alternator to the camshaft. When the engine is running, the GM alternator powers the automobile lights and the climate control system or HVAC system (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system. Inside the alternator is a rotor with a set of permanent magnets as core. On the internal wall of the alternator is a set o wire coils. When the rotor spins, its magnetic field is cut by the wire coils. In this manner, electrical current is induced by forcing the electrons of the wire coils to move.
