GM Fuel Pump

A GM fuel pump refers to the simple camshaft-driven, centrifugal pump that draws fuel from the fuel tank to be injected into the combustion chambers. The fuel pump has internal vanes that rotate. As the vanes rotate, air is expelled. This creates a vacuum state inside the fuel pump. The fuel then rushes to the water pump to fill the void inside. Atmospheric pressure is the force that drives the fuel to rush into the fuel pump. Unlike the coolant and engine oil, the fuel travels a one-way path. As the fuel enters the combustion chambers, it is ignited to produce the thermal energy needed to power the automobile engine.

GM Fuel Pump

An engine belt connects the GM fuel pump to the camshaft. When the engine is running, the fuel pump must continue working to steadily supply fuel to the combustion chambers of the engine. The vacuum state of the engine during intake stroke is not anymore strong enough to sustain an efficient combustion. Although the fuel pump continuously works while the engine is running, the flow of fuel into the combustion chambers is regulated by the fuel injectors. The fuel must only flow into the combustion chambers during intake stroke. The fuel injectors are computer-controlled valves that determine the amount of fuel to be sprayed inside the combustion chambers.

During the days when fuel pumps such as the GM fuel pumps were not yet developed, automobile engines had to rely on the partial vacuum state of the combustion chambers during stroke. Hence, the automobile engine then was prone to choke or sudden stop mainly because of lack of fuel.
